BRAINERD, Minn. – In the final results from Brainerd International Raceway and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder at the Lakes, Jim Greenheck took the win in Comp Eliminator along with a slew of home state racers led by local runner Brett Speer in Super Stock.

Greenheck, Schofield, Wis., faced off with former national champion Bruno Massel as the pair left the line together.  Greenheck motored down the quarter mile clocking in at 7.318 seconds, 184.80 mph for the win in his ’12 Camaro as Massel was off the pace with problems.

Speer, Little Falls, Minn., won a close one with Byron Worner, Duncannon, Pa., with Speer winning by about 11 inches in 10.152 seconds, 125.56 mph to Worner’s quicker 9.940, 129.80.

Four other Minnesota racers took home the hardware with Glen DeMenge, Trevor Larson, Joel Sandstrom and Gary Leoffelholz all won in their respective classes.  GeMenge, McGregor, Minn., beat out Candace Jurgens who left early with a red light foul start and Larson, Starbuck, Minn., took a close one over John Lobner in Super Comp.  Cam Grundman, St. Cloud, Minn., was out first on Sandstrom, Penqilly, Minn., but broke out giving Sandstrom the win in 10.915 seconds at 136.75 mph.  Loeffelholz, Shafer, Minn., won on a holeshot in the Jerry Haas Racecars Top Sportsman over Paul Pittman, out of Bloomington, Minn.  Loeffelholz went 7.480 at 182.45 mph to Pittman’s 6.573, 213.64.

The Madcap / Fineline Top Dragster trophy went to Phil Unruh covering the quarter mile in 6.426, 205.19 just six inches ahead of Shawn Anderson’s 7.264, 180.16.

Rounding out the Lucas Oil winners were Randy Nygaard defeating Dale Evens in Super Gas.  Nygaard recorded a 9.921 second lap at 137.85 mph to Evens’ 9.919, 156.12.  The Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley-Davidson title went to Beau Drexler.  Drexler and Kyle Lundberg left the line together but Drexler was better at the strip to take the win in 8.303 seconds at 155.45 mph.

The NHRA Summit Jr. Drag Racing League was also in action this weekend as Meagen Neil beat Erik Crooks in the Advanced class; Joseph Lindberg downed Jordin Jurgens in Intermediate; Cam Giese won over Brody Thompson in Novice; and Ryler Mohr took the Youth class over Addyson Scheleck.

In the Karl Performance Super Shootouts presented by Karl Chevrolet it was Tony Leonard winning in Super Comp; Tom Carlson took Super Gas; and Sandy Cawsey scored in Super Street.

West Central division racers are back at BIR this coming weekend when they will be joined by the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series for the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.

BRAINERD, Minn. – NHRA West Central division racers returned to Brainerd International Raceway as competitors took to the track for opening day of the Thunder at the Lakes NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. 

Racers in nine different classes made qualifying and time trials today which set the fields for Sunday’s eliminations.  Highlighting the action was Comp Eliminator, Fineline Madcap Top Dragster and the Jerry Haas Top Sportsman classes that made a trio of qualifying runs on the quarter-mile track.

The event is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND: a $519,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2016 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions. Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA’s seven divisions will compete for a share of the $124,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2017 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series’ eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2017 Jegs Allstars to be held at the 2017 K&N Filters NHRA Route 66 Nationals. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division and regional teams will share $25,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a “double up” bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2017 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

AEROMOTIVE LOW QUALIFIER BONUS: A $3,000 bonus fund paid to the low qualifiers in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and Stock Eliminator at each of the division’s six races. The best qualifying driver in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock will each get $200 per event, while the best qualifier in Stock Eliminator will get $100 per race.

JERRY HAAS RACE CARS TOP SPORTSMAN SERIES presented by Aeromotive: The Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman Series, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in the West Central division’s Top Sportsman class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $2,750 champions’ purse posted by Jerry Haas Race Cars will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers.

FINELINE GRAPHICS & MADCAP RACING ENGINES TOP DRAGSTER SERIES: The West Central Division Top Dragster Series, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in the West Central division’s Top Dragster class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $2,750 champions’ purse will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers.

NHRA SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE SERIES presented by HARLEY-DAVIDSON: The NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley-Davidson, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA’s Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $14,000 champions’ purse posted by Harley-Davidson will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.
